Mondays in Lent
5.00pm Bible Study Group (online)
This group meets every Tuesday at 5 pm via Zoom to read and discuss books of the Bible. We are currently working our way through the Acts of the Apostles having completed St Luke’s Gospel earlier. We work our way slowly and steadily through books, exploring narrative, historical context, theology, and relevance to us in our contemporary world. Fortified with prayer and contemplation. Our recent studies have seen us exploring books about women: Ruth, Esther, Susannah, Judith. Prophecy: Isaiah, Jeremiah. Gospels of Mark and Matthew. A mixed group of people from GSM and beyond. Coordinators are Brian and Paula Corby and facilitator, Andrew Day.
Tuesday
5.00-6.00pm Read, Mark, Learn (online)
Read, Mark, Learn meets online on Thursdays from 5 to 6 p.m. during school term. We normally look at one of the readings for the following Sunday Eucharist and we typically keep with the same book for several weeks. Each week there is an opening overview followed by discussion. We begin and end with prayer.
Thursday
12.30 Christian Meditation (in Michaelhouse) followed by soup lunch
The Christian Meditation group meets weekly in the Hervey de Stanton chapel in Michaelhouse on Mondays at 12.30pm. The group is growing; there are currently 15 people from a range of churches (and none) who attend regularly, and quite often friends and tourists join us. The meeting is 30 minutes long; after a guided time of preparation and an opportunity to reflect, we sit together for 20 mins – in silence. For those who can stay there is an option of a simple shared soup lunch at 1pm. The group is open to all and offers a still point and friendship in the middle of a working day.
Monday
Afternoon Home Study Group (in person)
The Wednesday afternoon study group is small because space is limited in the home where we meet. We are ably led by Catherine Smart who helps us in our study of the Bible by providing extensive background knowledge and insight. Over the past few years we have studied a number of books, including Revelation, all the gospels, Genesis, Isaiah and the epistle to the Romans.
Wednesday
7.30-9.00pm Bonhoeffer Group, Home Study (in person and online)
The Bonhoeffer Group is a study and fellowship group, which meets in person, and has online access when needed. There are about a dozen members, although not all can make the weekly meetings on Thursdays from 7.30 to 9 in central Cambridge. We enjoy light refreshments as we gather, then do a study, and close with sharing praise and prayer items. The group name came from its first study of a book about Dietrich Bonhoeffer, and we often study a short theological book together, but usually focus on Bible studies.
Thursday
2nd and 4th Tuesdays at 7-8.30pm Cloud of Unknowing
Discussion and meditation group hosted by members of the Great St Mary’s Christian Meditation Group (which meets in Michaelhouse on Mondays at 12.30pm).
2nd and 4th Tuesdays in the month at 7-8.30pm
In this group the intention is to go more deeply into the practice of contemplative prayer through shared reflections upon the writings of classic texts on Christian Mysticism, beginning with the anonymous 14th century text, The Cloud of Unknowing.
At each meeting we reflect upon a passage from the text, share our personal experiences of contemplative prayer, and conclude with a 20 minute time of silent prayer.
The group is currently fully subscribed, but if you are interested in joining at some point in the future, or to learn more about contemplative prayer, please contact Richard Summers below or Clare Stephenson on clares@gsm.cam.ac.uk

Each evening revolves around a pre chosen theme. Participants bring a poem on that theme, if they wish. We read the poems and talk about them. Some recent themes have included: Forgiveness, Friendship, Rebirth and The Sea. We do not confine ourselves entirely to poetry. Sometimes we listen to musical settings of poems, or some music. We have also visited the Fitzwilliam Museum, as a group, when two of our number spoke to us about some of the pictures there. Everyone is welcome
