Accessibility

Hearing loop

Great St Mary’s has a hearing loop that is effective in all the seating in the nave when the sound system is operating (such as during services and events).
There is currently no hearing loop in Michaelhouse.

Large Print

Large print service booklets and notice sheets are available at all our main services.  Please ask the sidespeople if you need a large print hymn book or service booklet.

Service Dogs

Guide dogs, hearing dogs and other service dogs are welcome in the Church, but cannot go up the Tower, for safety reasons, due to the nature of the staircase.

Toilets

Great St Mary’s: there is an accessible toilet, which also includes a baby changing station, by the south entrance. Please ask at the front desk for this to be opened for you.
Michaelhouse: there is an accessible toilet in the café.

Step-free access

Great St Mary’s: access to the church is step free at the west and south doors. There are currently two steps between the main nave and the chancel; we are working on a plan to make the chancel accessible. Seating is on fixed pews, but with some room at the front for wheelchair users, and we are planning to expand and enhance this provision.
St Andrew’s Chapel is currently accessed via a very narrow doorway; again, improving this is part of our ongoing work to improve the Church’s accessibility.
Michaelhouse: there is step free access to the café (ground floor seating area) and to the Chancel and Chapel. There is a lift available to access the mezzanine seating area and the first floor meeting room. Chairs in the cafe and at events in the Chancel are easily moveable to accommodate wheelchairs.

The Tower

There are 123 steps up to the top of the tower. Due to the constraints of the building, the tower is not suitable for wheelchair users or those with limited mobility, nor for service dogs.  If you are planning to visit and are not sure if you would manage the tower stairs, please contact us for more information.

Gluten

Gluten free communion wafers (and communion wine that is uncontaminated by gluten) are available at all services of Holy Communion.

Online

All our choral services, and morning prayer on weekdays (except in August), are livestreamed to youtube to enable those who are unable to get to church to remain part of the congregation. Communion at home is available to members of the congregation who cannot get to church due to infirmity or ill health. Sermons are made available (retrospectively) on the Church website for those who find it easier to process through reading than by hearing.

If you are planning a visit and have any questions about accessibility, please contact us at office@gsm.cam.ac.uk or 01223 747273.
